SMA Inverter FAQ: Emergency Power Questions Installers Actually Ask

When I first started coordinating emergency solar replacements, I assumed the fastest job was always the one with the best inverter specs. Three missed deadlines later, I realized the real work is logistics: what's in stock, what can ship today, and what the existing electrical system will actually accept. These are the questions I hear most from installers and facility managers searching for an SMA inverter. If you're on the same list, this FAQ will save you some downtime.

SMA Inverter: What Does 'SMA 2023 Inverter Sold GW' Mean?

In its 2023 annual report, SMA Solar Technology recorded roughly 19.5 GW of inverter sales for the year. That number includes residential string inverters, commercial inverters, battery inverters, and a good chunk of the utility-scale market. For an emergency replacement, that scale matters. In my role coordinating rush installations, I've handled 200+ orders since 2017, and a supplier with millions of units in the field usually has better part availability than a smaller manufacturer.

That said, the GW figure is a sales metric, not a reliability claim. It tells you SMA is a serious player. It doesn't tell you whether a particular inverter matches your PV array.

SMA SB 5000US Inverter: Still Worth Servicing?

The SMA SB 5000US inverter (Sunny Boy 5000US) was a common 5 kW single-phase string inverter on U.S. rooftops and ground mounts. It was designed for 240V split-phase systems and helped build a lot of solid installations over the years. Many are still running, which is why installers still search for this model.

But it's no longer in current production. If you're replacing one, don't assume the newer Sunny Boy 5.0-US is a drop-in. The DC input range, MPPT window, and arc-fault protection are updated, and the wiring requirements can be different. In an emergency, check the existing conductor sizing and combiner specs before ordering anything.

Can a 3500W Inverter Generator Power My Home or RV?

It depends on the loads. A 3500W inverter generator can usually run a refrigerator, a small microwave, lights, phone chargers, and a furnace fan. It will not run a central air conditioner, a heat pump, or an electric water heater at the same time as other loads.

For an RV, a 3500W generator is often enough for one roof AC unit if you manage the rest of the coach. Look at the generator's continuous rated output, not the marketing peak watts. If you ask me, the continuous rating is the only number that matters for emergency backup power.

How Do You Use an RV Manual Transfer Switch?

An RV manual transfer switch lets you choose between shore power and generator power without backfeeding either source. The process sounds simple, but I've watched this go wrong on a job site in 2023, so I'll say it plainly: turn off the incoming source before switching. If you're on shore power, unplug or switch the breaker off. If the generator is running, turn it off, move the selector, then start the generator.

Make sure the switch is rated for your RV's service: 30A or 50A. I get why people think a manual switch is unnecessary—one more box in the path. Looking back, I should have verified the switch rating before promising that an RV customer could feed a 3500W generator into the coach. At the time, the spec sheet seemed clear. It wasn't. Backfeeding can energize the pedestal or the utility feed, and that's not a lesson you want to learn at night.

How to Use a Battery Charger Safely

If you have a dead battery and a generator, the next question is how to use a battery charger without making things worse. First, set the charger to the right chemistry: flooded, AGM, or lithium. Connect the positive clamp to the positive terminal, then the negative clamp to a grounded frame point when possible. Keep the area ventilated, and don't charge a swollen or leaking battery.

A smart charger is worth the extra cost because it tapers off and stops before overcharging. Granted, a battery charger is not a solar charge controller. But if you're in an emergency, it can keep a critical battery bank alive until the inverter is running.

What Hidden Costs Should You Expect on an Emergency Inverter Job?

This is where I bring my honesty-about-costs speech. On an emergency install, the invoice line for the inverter is the least interesting number. You'll also pay for expedited freight, after-hours labor, possible rework on DC wiring, and maybe a new breaker or transfer switch. I've learned to ask what's NOT included before asking what's the price. A supplier who lists every fee upfront, even if the total looks higher, usually costs less in the end.

As of January 2025, last-minute freight from a U.S. distributor can add $150 to $400 depending on weight and distance. Those numbers change; the principle doesn't. Good estimates are based on current rates, not ads.

What's the Best SMA Inverter for an Emergency System?

If you need a grid-tied string inverter, the current Sunny Boy series is a safe starting point. For a typical residential system, a Sunny Boy 5.0-US or a larger 7 kW-class unit covers most rooftops. If you need backup with batteries, SMA's Sunny Boy Storage and Sunny Island lines work together, but that setup takes more planning and isn't something I'd rush without a real design review.

The best inverter for an emergency is the one your distributor has in stock, the one you can get delivered in time, and the one your crew can wire safely. That sounds like common sense. It took me three years and 200+ rush orders to understand that it's not common practice.
