SMA Inverter FAQ: Shipments, SB 5000US, 240V Generator Inverters, and AGM Chargers

Every week, I review spec sheets and test samples for SMA inverter projects before they go out the door. I work in quality compliance—not sales. Installers and integrators send me the same questions over and over, so I put the short answers here. If you want a sales pitch, this is not it.

What does SMA's 2023 inverter shipments GW number really tell you?

SMA reported around 19.5 GW of inverter shipments in 2023 (Source: SMA Solar Technology 2023 Annual Report, sma.de; verify current figures). That number is the combined AC output capacity of all the Sunny Boy, Sunny Tripower, and other units sold in that year. It is not a unit count.

From the outside, a big GW figure looks like proof that every model is flawless. The reality is that global shipment volume says very little about how a specific inverter will behave on your roof, with your local grid profile, or under your AHJ. Bottom line: global volume matters less than local tech support and warranty handling. I would rather buy from a manufacturer that ships 5 GW and has a responsive regional rep than from one that ships 19.5 GW and puts you on hold for three weeks.

Is the SMA SB 5000 US inverter still a solid choice?

The SB 5000US is a 5 kW single-phase string inverter that was extremely common in US residential solar. Honestly, I have mixed feelings about it. The hardware itself has a good track record, but the model number alone does not mean the unit will meet current code requirements. Some older SB 5000US installations used separate DC disconnects and older rapid shutdown components. If you are replacing one, get the latest datasheet and check the PV input voltage limits.

Per NEC 690.12, rapid shutdown is required where the current code edition is adopted by your AHJ. But the exact requirement varies by code year and local amendment. I have rejected submittals where the installer specified an SB 5000US and left the old, unlisted string combiner in place. That is a red flag.

We also had a process gap on our side a few years ago: no formal model-specific checklist for legacy products. It cost us rework on a system where the old DC disconnect was missing. The fix was a one-page verification sheet for every replacement inverter we quote.

Can an inverter generator with a 240V outlet replace a solar inverter?

No, because they do different jobs. A propane generator inverter is a fuel-based backup generator with an inverter stage that cleans up the AC output. If it has a 240V outlet, it can feed a well pump, electric dryer, or EV charger. A solar inverter takes DC from PV modules and converts it into grid-synchronized AC. A generator does not manage solar production and a solar inverter cannot burn propane.

If you are considering a propane generator inverter for backup, that is reasonable. Some hybrid solar inverters can also accept generator input to charge batteries during long outages. But do not buy a generator instead of a solar inverter based on the word inverter. And if you do need an inverter generator with 240V outlet support, check the panel list before purchasing—many portable units only offer 120V.

What is AGM on a battery charger?

AGM stands for Absorbent Glass Mat. It is a sealed lead-acid battery type where the electrolyte is absorbed in fiberglass mats. The AGM setting on a charger changes the charge profile—usually a lower absorption voltage than a flooded lead-acid battery—so the battery does not overheat or outgas.

People sometimes think AGM is a brand or a universal setting. Actually, it is a chemistry profile. If you have AGM batteries in an off-grid solar system, use the AGM setting. In 2024, I documented a small stack of swollen AGM batteries because the charger was left on a standard flooded profile. That was an avoidable equipment failure, and it happened in a system that otherwise had a healthy solar inverter.

For solar battery systems, the main point is to check the battery manufacturer's recommended voltages. The AGM label tells you the plate construction, not the exact charge voltage for your bank.

What should you actually check in an SMA inverter warranty?

Read the warranty as if some units will fail—because on a large portfolio, they will. SMA's warranty terms have changed over time, and as of January 2025 you should verify the current period and covered components on sma-america.com. The part that gets overlooked is the claim process: who handles local returns, what documentation is required, and whether labor is covered.

People think expensive inverters cost more because of brand marketing. Actually, manufacturers with low field failure rates can charge more because the total cost of ownership is lower. The price follows the reliability data, not the other way around. A warranty is only useful if the claim process is simple. If you have to fight for an RMA, the warranty is not worth much.

What is the most common mistake in SMA inverter submittals?

In my queue, the most common mistake is mismatched AC output voltage. A 208 V three-phase service and a 240 V split-phase service require different inverter configurations. I have rejected more than one set of submittals for this reason. On one commercial project, the rework added an extra site visit, new breakers, and a permit revision—roughly $18,000 in total cost and a two-week delay.

The second most common mistake is ignoring cold-weather PV input voltage. If the string voltage exceeds the inverter's maximum input voltage on a cold morning, the inverter can be damaged. SMA datasheets include the input voltage range; use a string sizing tool and double-check it against the local design temperature. This is not a reason to avoid SMA. It is a reason to treat submittals as engineering documents, not checklist entertainment.
