Should I buy SMA inverter if it costs more than the budget brand?

Yes, for most of our commercial bids, but not every project. If you're a contractor who saves $800 on the box and then loses a week on tech support, you'll end up paying for it. I only believed that after ignoring it once. In 2019, we ordered a cheaper string inverter for a 36-panel array. The price looked great. I'd rather be honest about that boundary than push SMA where it doesn't fit. Also, don't buy SMA if you're expecting zero maintenance forever. No inverter is maintenance-free. Anything with fans has fan failures; anything with a grid connection has problems when the grid misbehaves. SMA's failure rate has been low for us, but low isn't zero. There's also the service side. How do I buy SMA inverter and not get a gray-market unit?

Use an authorized distributor and verify the serial number after delivery. If a price looks 30% lower than normal street price, ask for paperwork. Gray-market units often lack regional warranties, and their grid-code settings can be wrong. I bought from an unwarranted reseller once—or rather, my former coworker did, and we found out when the unit couldn't be registered for local utility approval. That was a $4,000 lesson and a very awkward phone call. The serial verification process, if I remember correctly, took about twenty minutes on SMA's portal. Twenty minutes to avoid a multi-week utility rejection. Buy SMA inverter through a channel that can provide tracing. You might get a good unit, but you won't get a local warranty if you don't.
