The Real Cost of Whole Home Backup: Why a Solar Generator Beats a Gas Generator in 2025

For most homeowners, a solar-plus-battery system—specifically one using an SMA inverter—is financially superior to a gas generator for whole home backup. The total cost of ownership over 10 years is lower, the maintenance is negligible, and the fuel cost is zero.

I'm a procurement manager at a mid-sized solar installation company in central PA.   • Very high electricity consumption: If your whole home backup needs exceed 30-40 kWh/day, a gas generator may be the only practical option for extended outages. But this is rare for most homes in central PA.

The fundamentals of backup power haven't changed—you still need a reliable, sufficient energy source. But the execution has transformed dramatically. In 2025, solar-plus-battery isn't just the eco-friendly choice. It's the cost-savvy choice.
