Industrial Electrical Cabinet Checklist: 7 Steps Before You Approve a Custom Panel Build

If you are ordering a custom industrial electrical cabinet, breaker panel, MCC motor control lineup, main power distribution board, or electric motor control box, this checklist is for you. It is not for someone looking for a textbook explanation. It is for the person who has to approve drawings, sign the PO, and then live with the result.

I have been handling custom panel orders for 12 years. I have personally made and documented 23 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $68,000 in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team's checklist to prevent others from repeating my errors. This checklist has 7 steps. Use it before you approve fabrication, not after the panel is on the truck.

One quick note on efficiency: switching to a digital review checklist cut our turnaround from 9 days to 4. But for highly custom jobs, the old red-pen review still has value. In my opinion, hybrid is best.

Step 1: Lock the Load List and Duty Cycle

Before you talk enclosure size, get the complete load list. Every motor, VFD, heater, transformer, PLC, and control power supply. Include full-load amps, voltage, phase, starting method, and duty cycle.

Checkpoint: Does the load list match the mechanical schedule? Are there future loads that need spare capacity?

I once approved a 47-piece order where the load list said 'conveyor motors' without horsepower. The custom panel builder guessed. We ended up with an undersized electric motor control box. $3,200 in redo plus a week of delay. Not ideal.

Step 2: Verify Voltage, Phase, and Available Fault Current

This is the step most people skip. Get the available fault current at the point of connection from the utility or facility engineer. Then check the interrupting rating of every breaker panel and the short-circuit current rating (SCCR) of the entire assembly.

I knew I should verify SCCR, but thought 'what are the odds?' The odds caught up with me in September 2021. A main power distribution board was rejected because the assembled SCCR was 10kA, not the required 65kA. That error cost $4,800 in redesign plus a 2-week delay.

Checkpoint: Does the label show SCCR? Is it higher than the available fault current?

Step 3: Confirm Enclosure Type and Environmental Rating

Match the enclosure to the environment. Indoor clean might be NEMA 1. Dusty might be NEMA 12. Washdown needs NEMA 4 or 4X. Corrosive needs 4X. Hazardous locations need NEMA 7 or 9.

The 'we've always used NEMA 12' thinking comes from an era when washdown wasn't required in every food plant. That's changed. Today, a NEMA 12 industrial electrical cabinet in a washdown area will fail inspection. Worse than expected.

Checkpoint: Cable entry, ventilation, filters, heaters, and sunshade. All of it.

Step 4: Review Motor Control and Protection Details

For MCC motor control and electric motor control boxes, check overload relay sizing, contactor duty, short-circuit protective device, disconnect means, control voltage, and wiring class.

Checkpoint: Is control voltage 24VDC or 120VAC? Is there a separate control transformer? Are terminals labeled?

On a 23-motor MCC, we missed that one 15HP motor had a high-inertia load. The overload class was wrong. The starter nuisance-tripped for weeks. $1,100 in service calls plus embarrassment. A lesson learned the hard way.

Step 5: Check Physical Layout and Wire Bending Space

Request a dimensioned drawing. Verify wire bending space, gutter width, terminal access, and component spacing. Do not just review the schematic.

Checkpoint: Can a technician land wires without removing half the panel? Are breakers accessible? Is there room for future conduit?

I approved a main power distribution board from a PDF on my phone. When it arrived, the main breaker handle hit the door. The custom panel builder had to rework the door. Cost: $890 plus a week. I knew I should have opened the full-size drawing, but thought 'it'll be fine.' It wasn't.

Step 6: Verify Labels, Schematics, and Documentation

Require a UL 508A label, SCCR label, arc flash label per NFPA 70E, terminal labels, wire labels, and as-built schematics. Digital PDFs are fine, but a paper copy in the door pocket helps.

Checkpoint: Are component ratings on the label? Does the schematic revision match the build?

We once received a breaker panel with a 'rev C' schematic but 'rev B' wiring. Startup took 3 extra days. Lesson: no final payment until documentation matches. If you ask me, that rule has saved us more than once.

Step 7: Do a Factory Acceptance Test or Remote Pre-Shipment Review

If you cannot travel, ask for a video walkthrough. Point-by-point. Breaker operation. Relay settings. Torque marks. Megger results. Use a live checklist.

Video FAT cut our travel costs by about 40% and caught 63 potential errors in the past 18 months. Not perfect. Better than nothing.

Checkpoint: Are torque marks on all lugs? Are spare parts included? Is shipping protection adequate?

I skipped the final review because we were rushing and 'it's basically the same as last time.' It wasn't. A breaker panel arrived with the wrong CT ratio. $2,600 redo. That was the one time it mattered.

Common Mistakes and Final Notes

  • Do not approve drawings from a phone. You will miss something. I did. Twice.
  • Do not assume 'custom panel builder' means they know your plant standards. Send your spec.
  • Do not ignore arc flash. NFPA 70E 2024 requires an incident energy analysis or the table method. Arc flash labels without available fault current are a red flag.
  • Do not let schedule pressure kill the final review. That is how the $4,800 mistake happened.
  • The 'bigger breaker is always safer' myth comes from an era when coordination was less understood. Today, oversizing can reduce protection and increase arc flash energy. Verify coordination.

Efficiency note: The digital checklist and shared review board probably saved us 30% on rework last year. But for one-off, highly custom main power distribution boards, a senior engineer's red pen still catches things software doesn't. In my experience, hybrid is best.

If you only do one thing, make it Step 2. The rest matters, but SCCR and available fault current kill projects. Not ideal. But it's the truth.
