SMA Inverter Procurement: A 7-Point Checklist Before You Buy a 150 kW Inverter

I sign off on solar inverter purchases for a 40-person renewable energy EPC. Our inverter budget sits around $800,000 a year, and I've been doing this since 2019. In that time, one lesson has shown up again and again: the cheapest inverter quote is rarely the cheapest system.

That's why I use a checklist—not just a brand preference. This one is for anyone evaluating an SMA inverter, especially the SMA 150kW inverter for commercial or utility-scale projects. If you're an installer, integrator, or EPC buyer, these steps will save you money. At least, that's been my experience with 100 kW–1 MW sites over the last six years.

When to use this checklist

Use it when you are shortlisting SMA models for a new project, replacing an inverter under warranty, or comparing bids for a battery-coupled solar system. It's not for conceptual design. It's for the moment when you're about to sign a purchase order and want to understand the total cost.

  1. Match the inverter to the PV array before you match it to the budget.

    A 150 kW inverter is a class, not a target. Start with the PV array's DC voltage, MPPT window, and maximum input current. I made the classic spec error in my first year: I chose an inverter based on AC capacity and missed the MPPT voltage range. Cost us a 6-hour round trip to re-string half an array. Use SMA's Sunny Design tool or PVsyst, and then read the datasheet yourself.

  2. Calculate BOS and logistics costs—not just the unit price.

    When I compared two 2024 bids for the same SMA 150kW inverter, side by side, I finally understood why one bid was "cheaper" by $2,600 but ended up $4,300 more expensive. Bid A: $34,500 inverter, $1,200 shipping, monitoring gateway included. Bid B: $31,900 inverter, $3,800 shipping, gateway at $350, commissioning support $600. Total: A = $35,700, B = $36,650. The gap was hidden in the details.

  3. Warranty terms are total-cost items, not paperwork.

    I have mixed feelings about extended warranties. On one hand, they add immediate cost. On the other, a 150kW inverter replacement can involve freight, cranes, and two technicians—easily $4,000-8,000 in labor and logistics if it fails. Check SMA's standard warranty (often 5 years for commercial products) and the price of an extension before you decide. Factor in the average truck roll to the site.

  4. How to check for battery drain with multimeter before commissioning.

    Most people skip this. We didn't have a formal battery drain test until the third time a customer called about 25% battery drop overnight. Now it's part of every battery-coupled SMA inverter commissioning. Here's the quick method:

    • Turn off the main battery switch and wait for the inverter/charger to go into standby.
    • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    • Set the multimeter to DC amps and plug the red lead into the 10A jack. Most budget meters work this way, but check the 7 function digital multimeter manual to confirm the correct ports and fuse ratings.
    • Connect the meter in series: black lead to the battery negative post, red lead to the negative cable.
    • Wait a few minutes. Systems often wake up after reconnection, so late readings matter.

  6. Confirm grid compliance for the actual site.

  7. Run a 10-year TCO model, including the "cheap" alternative.

    In Q4 2024, I ran a TCO comparison where one vendor's equipment was $6,000 lower, but after reduced warranty, missing monitoring, and extra dispatch fees, the 10-year total was $11,000 higher. That's the difference between discounted cash flow thinking and sticker-price thinking. Use a conservative yield, annual degradation, and service call frequency. Then decide.

Common mistakes and notes

Don't let SMA 2023 inverter sales gigawatts replace site-specific design. 18.2 GW of volume tells you the company is financially stable and likely to keep service parts available. It doesn't tell you if the inverter's voltage range fits your string layout. I've seen people buy reputable equipment for one project and then pay thousands to fix the design afterwards.
