Is SMA an inverter brand I can trust?
Yes, with a caveat. I don't have hard data on total unit failure rates across every manufacturer, but based on our orders over the past five years, SMA's consistency is solid. What should I check before ordering an SMA Tripower?
Start with the usual: DC input voltage, MPPT voltage range, AC output voltage, and grid code compliance. Then check the commissioning and RMA path. Most buyers focus on price per watt and completely miss warranty claim speed. Can I use a 24VDC battery charger with an SMA inverter?
Not the way most people hope. A 24VDC battery charger is meant to charge a 24V battery bank, not to run an SMA solar inverter. Most SMA grid-tied and hybrid inverters operate with DC voltages in the hundreds of volts. The SMA Sunny Island off-grid line is built around 48V battery systems and manages battery charging itself. If you need a true off-grid setup with a 24V battery, SMA isn't the natural fit.
If someone does have a separate 24V battery for a small cabin, telecom site, or RV, a 24VDC charger can work—but it's independent of the solar inverter. Check the battery chemistry first. Oh, and make sure the charger's voltage setpoints match the battery manufacturer's spec. A lead-acid profile and a lithium profile are not interchangeable.
What is a Lion solar generator, and do I need one?
A Lion solar generator is a portable power station with solar input, charge controller, battery, and AC inverter in one box. The name is a little misleading because it's not a fuel-burning generator. It's really a battery with an inverter and solar input. It's not an SMA product, and you don't need one to make an SMA inverter work.
Where it can fit: as backup power for critical loads during an outage. A customer with an SMA grid-tied system will still lose power when the grid goes down unless they have a battery backup system. A Lion solar generator can power a router, modem, and a few lights without installing a whole-house storage system. It can also make a decent demo unit for customers who want to understand “solar generator” before committing to something bigger.
What's the difference between a generator and an inverter generator?
A conventional generator spins an engine at a fixed speed to produce AC power directly. If the load changes, the engine speed can dip, and voltage/frequency can wobble. That's the main reason sensitive electronics sometimes struggle on cheap portable generators.
An inverter generator produces AC first, converts it to DC, then electronically reconstructs clean AC at a stable frequency. Because the engine can adjust speed to the load, inverter generators tend to be quieter and more fuel-efficient. They're also safer for laptops, phones, and anything with a microprocessor.
But “inverter generator” is not the same as a “solar inverter.” SMA's inverters convert solar DC to grid-synchronized AC. An inverter generator burns fuel to produce clean AC independently.
