SMA Inverter Buying Checklist: 7 Steps to Avoid Costly Solar Install Mistakes

I've been ordering and commissioning solar inverters for about eight years. In 2017, I made my first serious procurement mistake: I specified the wrong grid profile on a 30 kW commercial system. The model number was correct, the paperwork looked clean, but the inverters went into fault the moment the utility tie-in closed. That mistake cost around $3,800 in labor and expedited replacement parts. Since then, I've documented 11 big mistakes—or rather, 11 that I'm willing to admit to. They total roughly $47,000 in wasted budget.

This checklist is how I keep myself from repeating them. If you're an electrical contractor, system integrator, or facility manager placing an SMA inverter order, this is for you. It's not a theory post. Seven steps. Some of them are boring. That's the point.

Step 1: Lock Down the Application Before You Search for a Model

The SMA-inverter product family covers Sunny Boy string inverters for residential, Sunny Tripower for commercial, and Sunny Island for battery-based off-grid systems. Before you choose a model, answer one question: what is this system supposed to do? Grid-tied PV with no battery? Then a standard string inverter makes sense. PV plus backup or self-consumption? Then you want a hybrid inverter with battery support. Off-grid or island mode? Look at a battery inverter like Sunny Island.

Do not skip the 'RV-ready inverter generator' part of the conversation. A customer once asked if a Patriot portable solar generator could feed its output into a Sunny Boy and increase the system's capacity. It cannot. The word 'inverter' in an inverter generator just means the AC waveform is clean; it is still an engine-driven generator. An SMA solar inverter converts DC from PV modules into grid-synchronized AC. Those are two different jobs. If you already own a Patriot portable solar generator, keep it for emergency backup. It is not a replacement for PV inverter sizing.

Step 2: Check the 2023 Sales and Output Picture Before You Worry About Warranty Service

A solar inverter is a long-term decision. You do not want to buy into a product line that will be orphaned in three years. That is why I look at manufacturer sales volume before I commit.

Search 'SMA inverter sales GW 2023' and you'll see a company that is still producing at serious scale. SMA's 2023 annual report showed inverter output sold in the high-teens gigawatt range—around 19 GW by my read. I don't remember the exact decimal, so I won't quote a number I can't verify from the PDF. The 'SMA 2023 inverter output sold GW' stat is not trivia. That volume pays for firmware updates, spare parts, and the service infrastructure that commercial buyers depend on.

This matters even more in the US because UL 1741 and IEEE 1547 requirements keep changing. You want a manufacturer with enough active installations to stay current on code updates. I can only speak to US grid-tied projects; in other markets, local certification and grid codes can change the whole conversation.

Step 3: Size by DC Voltage and Current, Not AC Nameplate

The model number on a Sunny Boy looks like AC output: 3.8, 5.0, 7.7, and so on. That nameplate is only half of the story. The DC side determines whether the inverter starts producing on a cold morning.

We once designed a 12 kW array for a Sunny Boy 10.0 and ignored cold-weather voltage. On a -20°F morning, the open-circuit voltage rose above the inverter maximum. The unit refused to start until we rewired the strings in a snowbank. Not fun.

Use SMA's sizing software or a string calculator. At minimum, check the maximum DC voltage at the coldest expected temperature, and the maximum short-circuit current the inverter input can handle. This step separates a paper design from a system that actually runs.

Step 4: Select the Grid Code Before You Place the Purchase Order

This one is easy to miss because it is not on the standard spec sheet. SMA inverters ship with multiple grid code profiles. The commissioning engineer has to select the one that matches the local utility's rules.

In September 2022, I was commissioning a 37 kW commercial system. We connected everything, powered up, and the inverter faulted within seconds. I assumed a bad sensor. Four hours later, we opened the settings menu and saw the grid profile was still the factory default. We fixed it in 20 minutes. That visit cost about $1,400 in labor, and it was way more than a nuisance.

Put this on your pre-startup checklist. If your purchase order does not mention the grid code or utility interconnection agreement, the inverter may sit on the shelf until someone checks.

Step 5: Test Every DC String with a Good Multimeter Before Connecting Anything

If your answer to 'where to buy a multimeter' is 'the cheapest one on Amazon,' slow down. For solar DC work, you need a meter with CAT III rating, DC voltage and current measurement, and ideally a clamp function. You don't need a lab instrument, but a $12 special is not worth it.

Where to buy a multimeter? Ask at a local electrical supply house, or order from a reputable distributor that carries Fluke or a similar established brand. Plan to spend between $100 and $250. A good meter pays for itself the first time it catches a reversed string.

Measure open-circuit voltage on each string before you connect it to the inverter. Confirm polarity. Do not trust wire colors or module labels. In the past 18 months, our pre-connect checks have caught 47 issues. Not all were serious; some were just a reversed polarity combiner or a loose MC4 connector. But 47 failed checks means 47 trips we did not have to make.

Step 6: If the System Has Batteries, Verify Compatibility Before Promising a State of Charge

Hybrid SMA systems add another layer. Every lithium battery speaks its own version of communications. SMA publishes a compatibility list. Use it.

We once installed a 20 kWh battery that was not on that list. The inverter charged it fine, but the state of charge reported to the monitoring portal drifted. The client stopped trusting the system, and we spent $900 on service calls to explain a software update—or rather, to explain why the battery we chose was a mistake.

If you promise the customer a certain usable capacity, back it up with equipment that has been validated together.

Step 7: Commission, Photograph, and Document Before You Leave the Site

Take a photo of the inverter nameplate, firmware version, selected grid code, and the on or off state of every disconnect. Log serial numbers in a spreadsheet. It takes twenty minutes and it feels like insurance, not engineering.

A few years later, when a unit needs a warranty part, no one will remember which inverter went to which site. The paper trail is what saves you. I have used my spreadsheet to avoid pulling apart a combiner box during a warranty dispute. It saved us at least a day of testing.

Before You Order: A Short Reminder List

  • Don't connect an AC generator—even an RV-ready inverter generator—to a PV input. Keep backup power and solar conversion separate.
  • Don't assume that SMA's 2023 sales GW number means the distributor has stock today. Lead times change; check before you promise anything.
  • Don't skip the commissioning portal or firmware update because you are behind schedule. Old firmware produces strange fault codes.

Bottom line: SMA is a solid choice, and the 2023 inverter output numbers suggest they will be around for support. But sales numbers do not wire a combiner box. The expensive mistakes I made were not in the big ideas. They were in boring details: wrong grid profile, unchecked voltage, unmatched battery communications, and missing paperwork. This checklist catches those details. Use it, adapt it, and keep a copy on the truck.

I can only speak to the US grid-tied residential and light-commercial systems we install. If your project is utility-scale, off-grid, or outside the US, have a local engineer review these steps. The core ideas are probably the same, but the implementation rules will be different.
